Level 1 vs Level 2 charging
As of October 26, 2026, a standard 120 volt outlet (Level 1, 1.4 kW) takes 31 to 170 hours to fully charge the 48 vehicle families we track. A 7.7 kW Level 2 charger takes 6.3 to 32.0 hours.
Where to buy: the lowest verified Level 2 prices at each common size
Selection rule, in full
Two rows each at 32, 40 and 48 A, the sizes most home chargers are sold at. Rows are the lowest verified prices among the models that match, ties by name; nothing is ranked on quality. Where none of them has a seller we link to, the lowest-priced matching model that has one is added as a last, labeled row.
Each price is the lowest verified at the named seller on the date the model's own page shows. Buy links open the seller's page for that exact model and are affiliate links that support this site; see the affiliate disclosure.

Hours are the EPA's measured energy from the wall for a full charge, divided by the power the car accepts: the smaller of the supply and its manufacturer published onboard limit. Each range runs from the quickest configuration in the family to the slowest, and the same wall energy is assumed at every power level. Miles in 10 hours multiply the delivered energy by the EPA range per wall kWh, and stop at a full charge. Level 1 is a 15 A household circuit, which the 125 percent continuous load rule of NEC 210.20(A) limits to a 12 A draw.
What overnight means at each level
In 10 hours, Level 1 adds 20 to 62 miles of range across these families, and a 7.7 kW Level 2 charger adds 107 to 332. 4 of the 48 families complete a full charge from empty within 10 hours at 7.7 kW in every configuration we track. If your car is parked longer than its Level 1 hours for the miles you drive each day, a Level 1 outlet covers that driving; if it is not, the Level 2 columns show what each step adds.
What each level needs and costs
| Charging level | Power drawn | Breaker size | Copper wire |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1, 12 A | 12 A at 120 V, 1.4 kW | 15 A | 14 AWG |
| Level 2, 32 A | 32 A at 240 V, 7.7 kW | 40 A | 8 AWG |
| Level 2, 40 A | 40 A at 240 V, 9.6 kW | 50 A | 6 AWG |
| Level 2, 48 A | 48 A at 240 V, 11.5 kW | 60 A | 4 AWG |
Across the catalog, the 148 chargers with Level 2 capability and a verified price have a median of $457, with the middle half between $267 and $761. The 8 Level 1 only units with a verified price run $140 to $300. Installation of a new 240 volt circuit is separate and not in these figures.

Level 1 and Level 2 questions
- How many miles does Level 1 add overnight?
- In 10 hours, 20 to 62 miles of range across the vehicle families we track, against 107 to 332 miles on a 7.7 kW Level 2 charger. Both figures use each family's EPA range per kWh drawn from the wall.
- How much does a Level 2 charger cost?
- Across the 148 Level 2 capable chargers in our catalog with a verified price, checked October 26, 2026: median $457, middle half $267 to $761, full range $109 to $6,301. Installation is separate.
