A full charge costs the energy your car draws from the wall times your electricity rate, and cars draw about 10 to 12 percent more than the battery's rated size while charging. The calculator below works it out for your exact car or battery size using August 2026 residential rates published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, charging loss included; the full 50-state table follows it.

The efficiency starts at 37.1 kWh per 100 miles, the median of EPA's combined consumption across the 321 model year 2026 all-electric configurations in EPA's fueleconomy.gov vehicle data, measured at the wall, so no charging loss is added to it. Picking your car replaces it with that car's own EPA figure. The gasoline car starts at 25.5 miles per gallon: EPA's model year 2024 new vehicle average of 27.2 mpg less the 1.7 mpg EPA attributes to electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles (EPA Automotive Trends highlights, updated February 19, 2026: The average model year 2024 new vehicle increased fuel economy by 0.1 mpg to a record high 27.2 mpg. Without BEVs and PHEVs, the average new vehicle real-world fuel economy in 2024 was 1.7 mpg lower.).

Manual battery entries add a 12 percent charging loss factor, because cars draw more from the wall than the battery holds. Picking your car above uses EPA's measured wall energy instead, which already includes the loss.

Every state at a glance

EIA publishes a weekly gasoline price for the United States, its regions (PADDs) and nine states: California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Texas, and Washington. Every other state shows the price for its EIA region, named in the table, under EIA's own PADD definitions; East Coast states use their sub-region and West Coast states other than California use EIA's West Coast except California series. EIA surveys prices on Mondays and releases them on Tuesdays; these are the week of October 26, 2026. Charging per 100 miles uses EPA's wall-measured consumption, so no charging loss is added; the full-charge column does add it. EIA weekly retail gasoline prices.

Per 100 miles, home charging runs from $4.72 in Nevada to $17.50 in Hawaii at August 2026 rates.
